How Long Does The Nicotine Withdrawal Last

This is a question, that every smoker has asked at least once in his "smoking career". In this article we are going to give you an overview over what you will have to expect when you try to stop smoking. Not knowing that is the main reason why smokers fail when they try to give it up.

The duration of the nicotine withdrawal depends on many factors. Each person reacts different on nicotine withdrawal, which takes influence on the duration.

There is two different types of withdrawal symptoms, the physical ones, and the psychological ones. The physical withdrawal symptoms of nicotine are minor, and relatively short, so we won’t discuss them here. Much more interesting for us is the duration of the psychological withdrawal symptoms, which are much more intensive.

Psychological withdrawal symptoms are not only imagination. They are inducted by biological processes in the brain. Those processes are indirectly triggered by nicotine, but nicotine is not directly able to make you want more of it. But what it does is, it manipulates your brain, until your brain makes you think, you need a cigarette. When you smoke a cigarette, your brain will be pleased. This is the so called "reward centre".

Being stressed for years, and decades the reward centre in the brain becomes deformed and its function is abnormal. The result is a hyperfunction,  which induces all the bad feelings that come together with the withdrawal. Now those symptoms do usually not disappear within some days or weeks.

Due to the complexity of the human brain it is impossible to anticipate how long the withdrawals going to last. Depending on the personal development, the emotional importance of the smoking habit and the strength of the types of usage the psychological withdrawal can last from one month to lifelong. We have to say that both cases are extreme examples. Most smokers need between 6 and 18 months until they feel no more urge to smoke.

Very effective ways to shorten this time is to help the brain, forget what it used to do. This can be realized very effectively with the removal of everything that can remind one of smoking. Meant is everything from ashtrays and lighters up to chairs, you used to sit on when you smokes. Avoiding places where you used to smoke can also be a very effective way to shorten the duration of the withdrawal symptoms.

No matter how long they last, they can be dealt with very effectively. One way is for example to substitute nicotine with other dopamine creating substances, that are non-addictive and harmless.
