Just like almost every other part of the body, the lungs have the ability to clean themselves when they are being polluted with fine particles. This is being done by the so called cilia. But as inhaling tar with cigarette smoke every day the cilia is all being covered up and it is not able to clean your lungs anymore. Your lungs are being polluted and are taking damage, due to the unability to clean themselves.

This process usually results in one ore more lung diseases, at which the chronic bronchitis and the so called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The chronic obstructive pulmonary disease does often occur as a result of the chronic bronchitis. Smoking blocks the cilia which is responsible for the removal of mucus out of the lungs. The self cleaning system of the lung is being disturbed. For being able to remove the mucus from the lungs the smoker has to cough it up.

After a coughing attack the smoker is often free of pain for hours. Especially during the night the mucus is being accumulated in the lungs which causes the well known morning coughing. The coughing is most often not able to remove all the mucus from the lungs.

Symptoms for a change over to a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): night sweat, ague, light signs of inflammation in the blood, wheezing, breathlessness during physical strain, raised susceptibility to infections.

The chronic bronchitis is treatable:

  • Strict smoking abstinence
  • Respiratory exercises
  • Tapping massage
  • Appropriate hydration
  • Light endurance sports, weight training and gymnastics
  • Oxygen provision in case of breathlessness
  • Systemic medication

If not treated, the chronic bronchitis can change over to a COPD. The major symptoms of a COPD are a shortness of breath, strong chronic coughing and sputum. Light forms of COPD can be dealt with. If smoking is not being given up then, the disease can advance to a heavy COPD. A heavy COPD can aggravate the symptoms so bad, that the oxygen supply does not work properly anymore, which can result in an complete immobility of the person. COPD is not tratable, but it can be dealt with and the symptoms can be eased with the help of the right medication. The medication usually consits of inhalable medicaments.

The worst lung disease, a smoker can get from smoking is lung cancer. Lung cancer can occur as a result of a long exposure to cigarette smoke and tar. It is not treatable, and the actuarial survival rate is only 10% for the first five years after the diagnostic. More than 85% of all people suffering from lung cancer are smokers.

The very best method to prevent all of the diseases mentioned above is to stop smoking as soon as possible and to avoid second hand smoke.
